We started our circle time with "The Boogie Walk," a song and dance that has us walk and shuffle to the left and then the right and then with arms raised. It's good exercise for the brain as well as the body as it tests coordination and memory. We used a language chart and recited "Five Little Gingerbread Men," to introduce or reinforce counting and to associate the written word with the spoken word. After listening to an interactive book on manners called, "Excuse Me," we gathered at the rectangle table for an experiment where salt is dissolved in water. Each child had h/her own cup/salt solution and observed the salt dissolve or turn the water white. "It looks like milk," someone said. We then swished our brush in the solution and painted with our salt and water mixture, commenting on the shine and texture on the paper.
